“As media lines blur, we all become editors.” {My thoughts on KONY 2012}
The KONY 2012 documentary did move and inspire me tremendously because despite the immense skepticism of the case at hand..It does again show that the internet can be used to mobilize people for things that really matter..We like to use the internet to make noise and voice our opinions on issues that bother us today; however, a lot of us don’t really use it that CONSTRUCTIVELY..Many people lack the thoroughness to research what they’re doing before jumping into it. People often lack the organization and consistency to actual stick with the problem once it has disappeared from the spotlight. The internet is way too powerful of a tool to just use emotionally or when there is a hype; we can do so much more with it.
Joseph Kony is a dangerous man and trying to spread awareness about him, and trying to create a world in which people like him are as famous as celebrities isn’t itself a good thing. There is much more to the story.
I thought of this book that I read, Blur: How to Know What’s True in the Age of Information Overload, by Tom Rosenstiel and it explains that while consumers need to be better equipped to vet information, news outlets should also adapt their reporting practices to provide the transparency that readers and listeners demand. He argues that news consumers need to learn to vet information in the same way journalists do.
I strongly agree that we all be our own editors in the event such as KONY 2012 because as the online world advances, it’s become harder to distinguish news from propaganda.
